Strapping and taping Physiotherapy
Strapping and taping can help prevent injury as well as protect an athlete from re-injury whilst returning to sport. It can also be used on patients to reduce muscles spasm, promote good posture as well as positioning of joints. Tape is used to limit the movement in injured joints or muscles and prevent excessive movement. It can be used to protect the affected areas therefore reducing pain.
Strapping/Taping is also used to enhance co-ordination. If an injured area e.g. an ankle is injured, strapping to the ankle can assist the balance receptors in the ankle, thus reducing the chance of further injury.
Strapping and taping can be used to:
- Improve stability of joint
- Decrease swelling
- Reduce risk of re-injury
- Improve postural awareness
- Protection of muscle, tendon and ligaments
- Improve blood flow to an injured area
- Reduce pain
- Increase balance/proprioceptive awareness to an injured joint
Strapping and taping can be used successfully in the treatment of:
- Shoulder injuries
- Knee pain
- Muscle strains e.g. in the hamstrings and calf
- Back pain
- Heel pain
- Ankle sprains
